This course reviews the basic skills required of an Expanded Duties Orthodontic Assistant as well as the regulations regarding such duties AND IS REQUIRED FOR ALL clinical orthodontic assistants. The duties and permissions coincide with those established by the Georgia Board of
Dentistry. The course covers, but is not limited to, the topics of band fitting and cementation, bracket bonding and removal, wire ligation and removal, and records acquisition.
PLEASE RECOGNIZE that many tasks which can be delegated to assistants in an orthodontic clinic REQUIRE the assistant to be certified as an “Expanded Duties Dental Assistant” ( e.g. This course does not include information regarding coronal polishing). You may refer to the Georgia Dental Association’s (GDA’s) website at: https://www.gadental.org/expanded-duties-and-coronal-polishing for information on expanded duties programs for dental assistants that include coronal polishing and other expanded functions.
Be advised, a member orthodontist of the Georgia Association of Orthodontists (GAO) administers the course. After reviewing the material presented, the candidates take a written exam which covers this material. A score of 80% is required to pass the exam and receive
certification by the GAO as an Expanded Duties Orthodontic Assistant and be in compliance with the requirements set forth by the Georgia Board of Dentistry.
